Abstract

The mental processes, physical elements, and materials involved in wayfinding and wayfinding signage are explored. Wayfinding is defined, and thematic and physical wayfinding are distinguished. The professions doing wayfinding design are described; copious examples of such design are provided. The importance and character of signage are developed, and the histories of both wayfinding and signage are briefly described. Detailed information on common types of substrates and additives for both fixed-content and nonelectric changeable-content signs is provided in tabular form.
