Preparation for professional careers in librarianship entails education at the master’s level in many parts of the world. In North America, a degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) is the credential preferred by most employers. While the content of library/information science education still includes traditional subjects such as reference, collection development, cataloging, and management, programs are including more courses on technology and electronic resources. Many programs are offering at least some of their courses online. Continuing learning is essential in order for librarians to adapt to rapidly changing information environments.
