Abstract

Recovering energy from municipal solid waste is appropriate for waste that cannot be prevented, reused, or recycled with less greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted. With the significant benefits of environmental quality and reduction of GHG emissions, municipal solid waste (MSW) is increasingly accepted as a clean source of energy. Several processes are developed to recover energy (heat/electricity) from MSW, although incineration and gasification technologies are established commercially. Novel technologies and enhanced performance, policies and regulations, and financial incentives will strengthen the value of waste to energy in the renewable energy market.
