Abstract

In this entry, various pyrolysis and gasification technologies have been critically reviewed, keeping in view the variations in the properties of various types of feedstocks (biomass and wastes) and various downstream applications of the products. Recent developments on pyrolysis and gasification technologies including fast pyrolysis, flash pyrolysis, ultrapyrolysis, vacuum pyrolysis, hydro- and methanopyrolysis, fixed-bed dry bottom gasifier, power high-temperature Winkler gasifier, circulating fluidized-bed gasifier, dual fluidized-bed gasifier, catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis products, catalytic steam gasification, plasma gasification, etc., have been described. Discussions have also been made on the selection of a suitable pyrolysis process as well as a gasifier for a particular type of feedstock and for a particular downstream application of products. The potential of the pyrolysis and gasification of biomass and wastes for the generation of clean energy for sustainable development has been discussed along with the world scenario of pyrolysis and gasification of biomass and wastes.
