Abstract

This entry introduces the concept of managing environmental problems at a systems scale. The goal is to overcome the barriers of local management inconsistencies through extending the system boundary beyond the main activity to a global reference frame, both on the preceding supply side and on the succeeding waste management side. Generic concepts on setting up an analysis, handling uncertainty within the data, and critically assessing the outputs of an analysis in the context of environmental sustainability are presented in a simple manner. The latter is demonstrated using a case study of green electricity production to assess its overall sustainability.
