Abstract

Bioenergy crops are perennial crops with potential to sequester carbon (C) into the biomass and soil while providing an alternative source of energy. The decrease in crop productivity due to soil degradation and the increased risks of global warming warrant assessing alternative sources of energy produced on degraded soils. New strategies to mitigate atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by increasing soil organic matter (SOM) and biomass productivity are some of the alternatives through bioenergy crops.
