Trace concentrations of most of the commonly used pesticides have been confirmed in groundwaters of the United States. Since groundwater is the source of 53% of the potable water, the more toxic pesticides and their transformation products are a concern from the standpoint of human health. Others are a risk to the environment in areas where contaminated groundwater enters surface water.
