Soils containing sulfide minerals that have not yet been oxidized through acid sulfate weathering are referred to as potential acid sulfate soils (potential acid SS). This entry first discusses the processes involved in the formation and accumulation of sulfide minerals in soils leading to the formation of potential acid SS. Processes related to the oxidation of sulfides in the formation of active acid SS are then examined.
