Abstract

The discipline of ecology has demonstrated that on smaller scales and on the scale of the Earth, all things are interrelated and interdependent. Thus, all life, including human existence, on Earth is dependent upon healthy and interdependent ecosystems. The focus of this entry is on the health of surface waters (i.e., aquatic ecosystems), particularly their constituent biota, yet the information presented is reflective of overall environmental health.
